  • Editor's Note: The United Way of Dodge City began its annual campaign on Sept. 1. The campaign will run until Feb. 14. In light of United Way's efforts to raise funds for charitable organizations in Dodge City, the Daily Globe will be profiling these organizations. This week's organization is the YMCA. The YMCA is an organization that focuses on three core value areas: healthy living, youth development and social responsibility. It carries out these values through a number of programs, including fitness classes and family programs. Some of the YMCA's offerings include a 12-week personal fitness program, yoga and spinning classes, family fun nights and a child watch program for when parents are using the facility. Some recent modifications to the Dodge City YMCA include an improved fitness studio. The Dodge city YMCA is a member of the YMCA of Southwest Kansas Association and is a sister branch of the Garden City YMCA. The YMCA also offers a Helping Hands scholarship program, for which anyone is eligible to apply. “We want to provide programs and services to meet those critical needs in the community and work with building families and providing opportunities to get involved,” Branch Executive Randi Clifford said. The Dodge City YMCA opened its doors on Jan. 2, 2013. It took over the Sheridan Center on the former St. Mary on the Plains college campus, replacing many of the programs operated at that location by the Dodge City Recreation Department. Currently the Dodge City YMCA has 2,682 members. It uses proceeds from the United Way for its child care programs. The YMCA encourages volunteer participation. To get involved, contact the YMCA at (620) 225 - 8157.
