  • The Dodge City Conquistadors didn't have a strong start Saturday night against the Pratt Beavers and was never able to completely get on track in a 90-72 setback at United Wireless Arena. The Conquistadors had trouble on both ends of the floor early and could never fully get back in the Jayhawk West contest, despite some runs late in the first half and early in the second half against the Beavers. Conqs' head coach Kyle Campbell said it was a matter of the players not following what got them to earlier success, primarily by playing as a team and working in the system. "It's the things that they control and it involves their energy and their effort," Campbell said. "We're going to make some changes and we'll deal with it at practice. We're going to find five guys who 'buy in'; and if we can't, then we'll find guys who do. "We have a long ways to go and we're going to start fixing (at practice)." Jelani Carpenter scored 17 points — 13 in the second half — to lead the Conqs in scoring. E.J. Eaves added 13 and Larry Beckett added 12 (all in the first half) for Dodge City (12-7, 1-2). Taylor Scheiber scored 37 points to lead the Beavers, including 8-of-10 from 3-point range, while Kevin Allen scored 15 (all in the first half). Other double-digit scorers for the Beavers (13-6, 3-0) include 13 for Kaion Latham-Seales and 10 for Deshun Roberts. Pratt was 31-of-50 from the field (62 percent). "We're going to have to learn how to guard," Campbell said. "We want them to play under our way, but guys want to be selfish and break down on our rules because they don't have enough toughness to guard for 35 seconds. Right now, we are probably giving given up 90 points a game in conference and that's just pitiful." The Beavers started strong on both ends of the floor to take command of the game early. The Conqs hit only two field goals in the first 8 1/2 minutes as Pratt was able to build a 24-5 lead. Dodge City cut the lead down to 11 before Pratt used a 12-2 run to build the lead to 49-28. Pratt led 53-37 at halftime after shooting 19-of-30 from the field after 20 minutes of play. Scheiber scored 16 in the first half for the Beavers and the visitors outrebounded Dodge City 20-8 (including allowing only one offensive rebound to Dodge City). Pratt started strong in the second half, outscoring the Conqs 13-4 after five minutes of play to build the margin up to its largest of the game at 66-41. Dodge City started to make a comeback over the next six minutes. The Conqs used a 22-7 run to cut the deficit down to 73-63, but two 3-pointers by Scheiber used the Beavers to get back in charge. Scheiber scored 21 of Pratt's 35 points in the second half. The Conqs' next game will be another home game Wednesday night against the Colby Trojans with a scheduled 8 p.m. tip-off.
