The Wichita East Blue Aces didn't have the same hot shooting touch they displayed the night before, but they hit the shots when it counted Friday night in a 52-48 victory over the Maize Eagles in a semifinal game of the Tournament of Champions at United Wireless Arena. The Blue Aces will be going for their 12th title in their storied history at the TOC. Samajae Jones scored 15 points to lead East (11-0) and Zach Jackson added 13 and Tyas Martin and Xavier Kelley scored 11 apiece in the win. Maize (9-2) was led in scoring by Connor Lungwitz with 12 points and Aaron Shaw added 11 in the loss. The Blue Aces didn't allow a Maize field goal for the first five minutes of the game to build an 11-1 lead and led 15-6 by the end of the opening stanza. The Eagles fought back in the second quarter and tied the game at 16-16 until East had a basket by Kelly and a three-pointer by Jackson at the buzzer to extend the lead up to 21-16 at halftime. East opened up the second half with another strong start to build a 13-point lead, but Maize slowly came back and cut the margin to 34-27 with one period left to go. Maize scored the first four points of the final quarter and cut the margin to three a couple of times midway through the stanza. The Eagles continued to pressure the East offense and tied the game at 38-38 with 2:02 left on free throws by Shaw. That lead lasted for only eight seconds as Tyas Martin converted a three-point play and the Aces then converted two free throws after a steal to make it a two-possession game with less than a minute left in regulation. The Aces were able to convert their free throws to keep the lead in the final seconds. East will play Hays for the tournament title at 6 p.m. tonight, while Maize battles Manhattan at 4 p.m. in the third place game.
