The Dodge City Red Demons couldn't find a way to stop the Leavenworth Pioneers offense in a 65-39 setback in a Friday afternoon consolation round game of the Tournament of Champions at United Wireless Arena. The Pioneers made 24 of their 44 shots – including 8-of-16 from 3-point range – to record the win. Leavenworth also was able to swarm the Dodge City defense into hurried shots for most of the game. Julian Sands scored eight points to lead the Red Demons (4-5), while Austin Weiser added seven. Jace Larson injured his right foot midway through the first half and didn't return in the contest. “It was unfortunate that Jace hurt his ankle again,” said Dodge City head coach Dennis Hamilton. “We are still taking baby steps than normal, but we had some good things. It's coming, but we have a few guys struggling. It's not a great time, but this is a tough tournament. That doesn't hide the fact that we have to get better, and we will.” Leavenworth head coach Larry Hogan showed the Pioneers a scene from The Lion King for his team after being drilled by Wichita East in the first round. It reminded them to forget about what happened and to return strong against the Red Demons. “It's where Rafiki hits Simba with the stick on the head and when Simba asks why he did that, Rafiki replies that it doesn't matter and it was in the past,” Hogan said. “We told them whatever happened, it was in the past and let's just move on. “We just probably played a perfect first half where everybody contributed. I was pleased with the play of our guys tonight, but we've been doing that on and off, so we need to get some consistency.” Cameron Wiggins scored 18 points and grabbed seven boards to lead Leavenworth (6-4) and Jason Randall scored all 16 of his points in the first half to spark the Pioneers in the first half. The Pioneers never trailed in the game, scoring the first five points of the contest. After Dodge City cut the margin to one, Leavenworth went on a 12-point run on the way to building a 22-8 lead by the end of the opening period. The Pioneers made nine of 14 field goals in the stanza. Leavenworth continued to pull away in the second quarter, building the lead to 40-18 by halftime. The Pioneers finished the half shooting 16-of-27 (7-of-12 from 3-point range), while Dodge City was 6-of-20 from the field. The Pioneers again was able to extend the lead in the third quarter up to 27 points late in the stanza before a late three-pointer by the Demons cut the deficit to 51-27 going into the final eight minutes of play. Leavenworth was able to extend the lead up to 30 late in the fourth quarter before the Red Demons were able to whittle the margin down to the final score.
