The Dodge City Red Demon girls' basketball team ran into a buzz saw Thursday in top-ranked (KBCA, Class 5A) and unbeaten Kapaun-Mt. Carmel, falling 56-27 in the first round of the 38th Newton Invitational Tournament at Ravenscroft Gym. Dodge City (4-5) plays in the consolation semifinals at 4:45 p.m. against Andover Central. "They are a very physical team," Dodge City coach Kelley Snodgrass said. "We turned the ball over against their press. We have to take care of the ball better. They are very good team. They have a dual threat. They have a big girl inside and they have a girl outside that can shoot it. They are very physical. They are strong inside. They pushed us around. We just have to recover and keep playing. We played pretty good defense until late in the game, when we got tired against their big girl." Kapaun was led by Sam Bachrodt with 19 points, hitting three 3-pointers, and 6-foot-1 Sydney Kuhn, who scored 16 points. Dodge City was led by Katrina Roenfeldt with nine points. Kapaun tied a tournament record for fewest free throw attempts in the game. The Crusaders didn't shoot a free throw in the game. There were only 14 fouls called, nine against Kapaun. Dodge City was five of six from the line. The Red Demons jumped out to a 5-3 lead, but Kapaun finally started hitting its shots and ended the first quarter with an 11-3 run. "We started out well," Snodgrass said. "We hit a couple more of those shots, and it's a different game. We went cold. We need to get more attempts." Kapaun opened the second quarter with a 10-5 run. The Red Demons were held to just two field goal attempts in the first 5 1/2 minutes of the period. Dodge City took a time out, but couldn't stop the bleeding as the Crusaders led 28-13 at the half. Kapaun hit 13 of 34 from the field in the first half, while Dodge City was four of 11. The Red Demons had 11 turnovers in the first half to two for Kapaun. Rachel Durler scored Dodge City's first point of the second half one of two free throws with 4:44 remaining in the period. Kapaun struggled to hit shots, but still made the 6-1 run. Kapaun led 40-19 at the end of the period. Dodge City had eight turnovers in the quarter. Kapaun opened the fourth quarter on a 7-3 run, then dumped the bench for the remaining 2:45. "I was pleased with the effort," Snodgrass said. "We played hard."
