  • To help meet the needs of this season's blood supply, Dodge City Community College (DCCC) is hosting an American Red Cross “We Challenge U” blood drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 11. at the college at 2501 N. 14th Ave. Donors will receive a “We Challenge U” t-shirt, while supplies last. “We thank Dodge City Community College for accepting the challenge from the Red Cross,” said Trisha Quinn, CEO of the Central Plains Blood Services Region, in a news release. “Donating blood is an easy way to volunteer, and it helps patients in need.” DCCC hosts the blood drive twice per year, once in the fall semester and once in the spring semester. “It's a chance to introduce our students a lot of times to volunteerism, being active in their community… It also gives our nursing department an opportunity to volunteer and help,” Dean of Student Services Kelly Russell said. Winter can be a challenging season for collecting blood, as both inclement weather and seasonal illnesses affect the number of donations. Since the beginning of January, inclement weather has resulted in over 600 American Red Cross blood drive cancellations and almost 20,000 uncollected blood donations. “Right now with the weather that has swept across the country people are not able to get to their blood drive appointments and we've had quite a few cancellations throughout the month of January,” said Jan Hale, communications program manager, field marketing, for American Red Cross Blood Services. Hale said the Red Cross is hoping to see approximately 50 students attend next week's drive. As much as 20 percent of donations given to the Red Cross come from college and high school blood drives. The “We Challenge U” program promotes college student involvement in the community through the organization of blood drives and recruitment of friends and faculty to give blood. To make an appointment to donate or for more information, DCCC students, faculty and staff may call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org, sponsor code: DodgecityCC. Before giving blood, donors will register, complete a brief health-history screening and have their pulse rate, blood pressure, temperature and iron level checked. The donation process takes about one hour, with the actual blood donation taking about 10 minutes. Refreshments are provided at the end of the process.
