The Dodge City Red Demons went on a roller coaster ride Saturday night in their Western Athletic Conference game with the Liberal Redskins. In the end, the Red Demons claimed a 54-52 victory that ended a five-game losing streak and kept the team in position to stay within striking distance of Hays in the league standings. "It was a good win and much needed," said DCHS boys basketball head coach Dennis Hamilton. "It's been up and down and this game ends our first run through the league and we're 3-1 and that's something we can hang our hat on. We are still in a position where we can go to Hays on the last Tuesday of the season and have some 'say so.' "This was a good win. Liberal is a much improved team, but we had some good performances." At the top of the list was guard Jackson Oldham. Oldham scored 13 points -- including three 3-pointers at key times of the contest. He also was able to find teammates open for baskets as well. "He stepped up with confidence and I think, in some ways, this could have been his best game for us this year," Hamilton said. Jace Larson added 10 points for the Red Demons (5-8, 3-1), while Austin Weiser and Noah Williams scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds apiece. Hayden Coker scored 13 points -- 10 in the opening quarter -- to lead Liberal (5-9, 1-3) and Jared Hasik added 10 for the Redskins. The Redskins used a five-point run followed by a 10-point run to build an 18-5 lead late in the first quarter. Dodge City followed that with an eight-point run to cut their deficit to 18-13 midway through the second quarter. Dodge City scored 17 points in the second quarter and trailed 27-24 at halftime. The Red Demons scored 10 of the first 12 points of the third quarter and the Dodge City defense gave up only one field goal to build a 43-32 lead by the end of the stanza. Oldham made all three of his three-pointers in the period. Dodge City continued to push and led 49-36 with five minutes remaining in regulation on a basket by Weiser before Liberal started its comeback with the help of the Red Demons' problems, making one basket and only 3-of-13 from that point in the final five minutes). Cade Hinkle hit two 3-pointers to start an eight-point run to cut the deficit to 49-44. After a basket by Larson and a free throw by Weiser, Hasik made a basket and Britton Abbott recorded a three-point play to make the score 52-49 with 2:00 left. Coker recorded a basket and Abbott hit one of two free throws to cut the deficit to 53-52. The Redskins had two chances to take the lead in the final seconds to take the lead, but couldn't score the go-ahead bucket with Bryce Unruh hitting a free throw to close out the scoring. The Red Demons will play at Ulysses in the second of a three-game road trip Tuesday night.
