  • February is National Pet Dental Health Month and pet owners are encouraged to talk to their veterinarians about proper dental hygiene for their animals. “We need to get out of the habit of waiting to treat problems once they occur,” said Dr. Gary Modrcin, a dentist and oral surgeon with BluePearl Veterinary Partners, in a news release. “Instead, people should focus on preventing problems, which means less expensive procedures and less pain for your furry friends.” PetMD.com states that more than 70 percent of cats and 80 percent of dogs will display signs of dental disease by the time they are 3-years-old. At Northside Veterinary Clinic in Dodge City, Dr. Mary Davis sees a large number of animals come in with dental problems. Oral exams with dental X-rays are one way to help prevent dental problems in pets, as is regular daily brushing. Davis said the best thing for puppies is to brush their teeth. As the dog grows older, they will then be more accustomed to the brushing. The next step includes products like tartar-control foods. Dental disease can exacerbate other problems in pets, such as diabetes, inflammatory disease and autoimmune diseases. Local pain and infection also plays a part with dental disease. “Dogs with dental problems often have heart problems and kidney problems, so preferably it’s all about prevention,” Davis said. Most signs of dental disease in pets are not recognizable until it’s too late, however symptoms can include bad breath, pawing at the face, brown teeth, swollen or red gums, and hesitation to eat hard foods.
