  • The Dodge City Red Demons outscored the Ulysses Tigers in each quarter on the way to a 60-41 Tuesday night road victory. The Red Demons won their second game in a row in their traditional way of forcing turnovers or bad shots on defense and working on getting the high-percentage shots when they had the ball. "I think we took a step in the right direction," said Dodge City head coach Dennis Hamilton. "I thought Ulysses is a pretty good team. They were pesky, but we overcame it and continued to grind. "For this group to shoot better than 50 percent from the field and 73 percent from the line and to hold (Ulysses) to less than 40 percent from the field is good. Hopefully, this week turns into a special week." Hamilton was pleased with the way the Red Demons handled the ball on the night, committing only nine turnovers in the game (six before Dodge City emptied the bench for the final two minutes of the contest). Dodge City also held the Tiger starters to nine points in the contest. Austin Weiser scored 14 points to lead the Red Demons (6-8) and Bryce Unruh added 11 in the victory. "Austin is starting to get confidence and I thought he was a good floor general for us," Hamilton said. "Bryce was kind of sneaky quiet for his points and that was good also." Jace Larson scored seven points for Dodge City, as did Noah Williams despite being in foul trouble early in the contest. Kyler Barlow led Ulysses (6-10) with 12 points (all on three-pointers), while Lundon Wiginton and Jason Borthwick scored eight in the loss. The two squads traded the lead four times in the first quarter with Dodge City closing out the stanza with a six-point run for a 16-11 lead. Ulysses was able to cut the margin down to two midway through the second quarter before the Red Demons closed out the half with a 9-1 run to take a 29-20 lead at intermission. Weiser scored 10 of Dodge City's points before halftime, while Larson added six for the Red Demons. Dodge City used a seven-point run in the third quarter to push the lead back up to double digits for good at 38-24. Ulysses was able to get the deficit back to 42-31 by the end of the stanza, but the Red Demons scored 14 of the first 16 points in the final period to close out the win. The next game for the Red Demons will be Thursday night at Colby. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
