The Dodge City Red Demons played a barnburner Saturday afternoon at DCHS Fieldhouse against the Wichita Collegiate Spartans in their final non-conference regular season game. The Red Demons had their chances to claim the victory, but trouble at the free throw line allowed Collegiate to force overtime and then took control of the extra stanza to record a 52-48 decision to end Dodge City's three-game winning streak. Both teams have similar styles in using defense to force their opponents into making mistakes with neither team having more than a six-point lead throughout the contest. There were 13 lead changes and 11 ties in the contest. Although Dodge City was able to get through the Collegiate press to shoot better than 50 percent from the field in the second half of regulation; the Red Demons (7-9) made only seven of its 18 free throws during the same time frame to allow the Spartans (11-5) to stay in the game. "We battled against a highly-ranked team and that is encouraging," said Dodge City head coach Dennis Hamilton. "Our kids were there and the game unfolded the way we would have liked. Our kids played hard. There are positives here; but we just didn't quite collectively get it done tonight. We win as a team and lose as a team. "We had a couple of long faces and that's good because they care. Our kids showed character tonight. I don't think we took any steps back in the defeat." Senior guard Austin Weiser led Dodge City with 18 points before fouling out. Jace Larson and Noah Williams added seven apiece in the game. "Austin had a really good game," Hamilton said. "We would have liked to have had him there at the end, but he had a couple of calls go against him. He led us quite well." Brodey Dick led Collegiate with 16 points, while Austin Waddell added 15 and Jack Larsen 10 in the win. The Red Demons scored seven of the first 10 points of the contest, but Collegiate was able to cut the margin down to 11-10 by the end of the first quarter. The teams exchanged the lead throughout the second quarter with Dodge City leading 19-18 by the end of the first half. Weiser scored 10 straight points in the first half for the Red Demons. Neither team could keep stay ahead in the third period as the teams exchanged the lead seven times with the Spartans leading 30-27 going into the final quarter. Dodge City missed all six of its free throws in the quarter. The Red Demons fought back and was able to build a four-point lead with 1:24 left in regulation; but the Spartans were able to cut the lead to one on a free throw and basket. After a Dodge City free throw made the lead two, Austin Waddell hit a basket with five seconds left for the Spartans to force overtime. Xzavaier Adams led Collegiate in the overtime; scoring five points in the extra period. Dodge City went 1-for-6 after regulation. The Red Demons begin their second time through the conference schedule with a road game Tuesday night at Garden City. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. "We have to get ourselves back on track and we want to have a say on who wins this conference title and that starts at Garden City," Hamilton said.
