Freshman Tia Bradshaw hit two free throws with 10.7 seconds left and the Dodge City Lady Demons made two defensive stops after that to complete a 44-43 victory over the defending Western Athletic Conference champion Garden City Lady Buffaloes. Bradshaw was fouled when shooting a short shot after the Lady Buffaloes missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity. Bradshaw, a 33 percent free throw shooter on the season, made the first, then the second after Garden City called a timeout to try to freeze her. "She's a freshman; but she's ice cold," said Dodge City head coach Kelley Snodgrass. "I felt like she wanted the ball in her hands. We spread the floor and stepped up and hit some big free throws. That was huge." Bradshaw's free throws were the final points scored as the Lady Demons (9-8, 3-2 WAC) beat the Lady Buffaloes at The Garden for the second straight year and spoil Senior Night. Dodge City beat Garden City in the facility in last year's Class 6A sub-state contest. The Lady Demons slowed the pace of the game down and played hard defense against the Lady Buffaloes in winning their fifth straight game. Dodge City scored 13 points off 16 Garden City turnovers; and outrebounded the taller Lady Buffaloes (35-33), getting 13 more points off of 14 offensive boards. Another factor was in the Lady Demons' free throw shooting. After making only three of their 10 shots from the line in the first half, Dodge City made 11 of its 14 free throws in the second half. "Emotions were running high," Snodgrass said. "I was extremely proud to see them fight back and trust one another. I'm glad to get out of here with a 'W'. "The two points of emphasis we talked to the girls about were no second chance opportunities and no easy baskets. I felt if they had to play against our defense, then we'd have a chance." Katrina Roenfeldt tallied 13 points to lead the Lady Demons in scoring, while Brianna Bradshaw added nine and grabbed 10 rebounds in the win. Taryn Tempel led Garden City (10-8, 3-2) with 14 points and Jaymie Bernbeck added 10. The Lady Demons pushed out to an 11-7 lead after the first quarter and led by three with five minutes remaining in the second quarter before the Lady Buffaloes used a 10-1 run to gain a six point lead late in the first half. Baily Shelor hit a basket just before the end of the half to cut the Dodge City deficit to 23-19 at halftime. The third quarter was pretty much a wash as neither team could pull away in the contest; but the Lady Demons fought back to tie the game at 40-40 with 2:30 left in regulation. Tempel hit a free throw with 2:03 left in regulation to give the lead back to Garden City; but Brianna Bradshaw hit two free throws to put Dodge City back on top with 54.6 seconds left. Tempel made a basket to put the Lady Buffaloes back on top and then stole the ball to set up a chance to push the lead to three with 17.4 seconds left; but Jacksenie Tornero missed the first free throw in the one-and-one opportunity, setting up the final dramatic situation. The Lady Demons will host Great Bend in another league battle Friday night at DCHS Field House. Great Bend currently leads the league with a 6-0 record.
