  • The Dodge City Red Demons looked to spoil the Garden City Buffaloes Senior Night celebration after they had turned in one of their best defensive showings of the season in their first meeting last month. The Buffaloes, instead, pulled out one of their best shooting nights of the season in recording a 60-51 victory over the Red Demons in Western Athletic Conference action Tuesday night at The Garden. Garden City made 23 of its 34 shots (67.6 percent) in the contest in forcing the Red Demons to suffer their second straight loss. The Buffaloes made four of their six attempts from three-point range on the way to scoring more than double against the Dodge City defense than the 29 they put up in the first meeting. "They were the better team (Tuesday night) and shot lights out," said Dodge City head coach Dennis Hamilton. "Sometimes the ball bounces a certain way and ends up that shots go in from nowhere; and you get the idea that it just wasn't meant to be. "Our kids gave great effort and some things were going our way in the fourth quarter; but Garden City did some great things and shooting the ball was one of them." Austin Weiser led Dodge City (7-10, 3-2) with 18 points, while Jace Larson added 14 for the Red Demons. Jared Koster scored 20 points to lead Garden City (11-7, 3-3), while Tristian Nanninga added 17 and assisted on seven baskets in the win. The first quarter saw both teams shoot the ball well. Garden City was 6-of-9 from the field; while Dodge City was 5-of-9. The Red Demons made four of their six free throws in the stanza to lead 14-13 after the opening period. The Buffaloes took control of the game in the second quarter by hitting 5-of-7 (including all three of their three-point attempts) to take the lead. Garden City led by as many as eight points before a quick mini-run — including a basket by Larson just before the buzzer — cut the Dodge City deficit to 30-25 at halftime. Garden City continued with the hot hand in the third quarter, making seven of 10 shots in the stanza to increase the lead to 44-34 going into the final quarter. The Red Demons didn't wilt after the Buffaloes built the lead up to 12 in the fourth quarter. Larson hit two 3-pointers to cut the margin down to 50-44; and a three-pointer by Dayton McGroarty cut the deficit to 52-49 with less than a minute to go. Garden City wouldn't be denied their victory as they hit their free throws to seal the game. The Red Demons will face Great Bend in another league matchup Friday night at DCHS Field House.
