  • The Dodge City Lady Demons withstood a fourth quarter challenge by the Hays Lady Indians, scoring the final nine points in a 41-32 Western Athletic Conference victory Tuesday night at HHS Gymnasium.
The Lady Demons had to play without leading scorer Katrina Roenfeldt due to an ankle injury; but many of the Dodge City players overcame moving to positions they weren't used to on the floor and gained some valuable varsity experience in the win.
"I was very proud how the girls fought through some adversity and in the way they finished," said Dodge City head coach Kelley Snodgrass. "(Hays) forced us to do some things defensively.
"With the adversity and people injured, I felt as though that they stepped up to the challenge."
Jessie Harshberger scored 18 points to lead the Lady Demons (10-9, 4-3) as she had to be more of a catalyst for the Dodge City offense. Harshberger scored 14 of her points in the first half.
"We found Jessie some open looks against their defense and she also was able to crash the boards and also got three steals," Snodgrass said. "We were looking for her to step up. She can knock them down anywhere; she just has to have the confidence to do it."
Brianna Bradshaw added eight points for the Lady Demons.
Hays remained winless on the season after 19 games, but gave themselves a chance to claim the victory on Senior Night at home. Mattison Schlaefli led the Lady Indians with 12 points in the loss.
Neither team shot the ball well in the contest. Dodge City was 14-of-47 overall (4-of-22 in the second half), while Hays made only 12 of its 43 attempts (4-of-20 after intermission).
Dodge City outrebounded Hays 44-26 in the game, including 20-8 on the offensive end).
Harshberger (six points) and Schlaefli (five) were most of the offense in the first quarter with the Lady Demons building a 9-7 lead.
Dodge City scored nine of the first 11 points of the second quarter to build its biggest lead of the game at nine; but a late three-point play by Schlaefli cut the margin to 24-18 by halftime. Harshberger scored eight points in the stanza.
Both teams made only one basket apiece in the third quarter — Dodge City shot 1-of-11 and Hays 1-of-9 — and tallied only four points to keep the Lady Demons' lead at six with a 28-22 cushion.
The Lady Indians scored 10 of the first 14 points of the final quarter to tie the game at 32-apiece before the Lady Demons clamped down on defense and were able to use the offensive rebounds to get back ahead with their game-ending run.
