  • Stay Tuned: ‘Vikings’ needs to do more in Season 2

  • The History Channel claims that its original scripted series, “Vikings,” will take you into “the brutal and mysterious world of viking warrior Ragnar Lothbrok” (Travis Fimmel). They’re right about one thing: Ragnar’s world is violent. But the only mystery is why nothing much happens. In Season 1, Ragnar wanted to sail west to England. The earl who runs his village says no and tells him to go east. Ragnar goes west anyway. He and his fellow Vikings rape, pillage and plunder as you do, when you’re a Viking.
Ragnar is married to Lagertha (Katheryn Winnick) who is a Shieldmaiden (a woman who fights as a warrior) and one of the few interesting characters on the show. She kills one of Ragnar’s men for raping a woman while they are sacking an English village and dispenses justice in her husband’s absence with a strong feminist point of view. Her slave is a monk who Ragnar brought back from a previous raid after slaughtering his entire religious order. When she goes west with Ragnar for some more pillaging, she leaves her children in the monk’s care and warns him that if anything happens to them she will rip out his lungs. The only other woman who seems as fierce as Lagertha is a very tall bleached blonde who appears briefly to preside over a Viking funeral. She wears the two-horned hat. It’s not really a Viking show without the hat is it?
Lagertha is a good match for Ragnar but that doesn’t mean he’s afraid to cheat on her with another Shieldmaiden named Aslaug (Alyssa Sutherland). He should however, be afraid of his brother Rollo (Clive Standen) who sides against him in the impending war that ends Season 1. Will Ragnar survive the battlefield, his brother’s betrayal and his wife’s wrath? More importantly, will Fimmel look less bemused in Season 2? His gives Ragnar two expressions: amused smirk and not amused smirk.
As a fan who is still mourning the end of “Spartacus,” I watched the first season of “Vikings” hoping to enjoy a show with a similar aesthetic. While there are men in leather with swords, they aren’t half as much fun as gladiators. Watching Vikings sail on their well-constructed boats, courtesy of master craftsman Floki (Gustaf Skarsgard), whose fondness for eyeliner makes him the most fun member of Ragnar’s crew, is one thing. Watching them do this more than once requires a nap in between sailing times.
The second season of “Vikings” premieres Thursday, Feb. 27 at 10 p.m. EST on History.
