The Dodge City Red Demons overcame a seven-minute shooting drought to beat the Liberal Redskins 46-40 in the final regular season game of the season Friday night at DCHS Field House.
Jackson Oldham hit a three-point basket, Jace Larson hit two free throws and Austin Weiser stole a pass and made a lay-up to seal the victory for the Red Demons in their final Western Athletic Conference game of the season.
Weiser led Dodge City (9-11, 5-3) with 13 points, while Julian Sands added nine points and grabbed six rebounds and Jace Larson had eight points and eight boards in the win. All three were playing their final games at the Field House.
The Red Demons don’t know who they will play in a Class 6A first round contest on the road at either Hutchinson or Wichita North. The two teams will flip a coin to decide the seeds. Dodge City closes out as the No. 5 seed. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday.
“It feels really good to go out with a win on your home court as a senior,” Weiser said. “We’re ready to play. We’ll prepare for them, whoever it is.”
Dodge City head coach Dennis Hamilton said the Red Demons were able to get things back together in the late stages of the contest after Liberal tied the game with an eight-point run and took a one-point lead with 2:45 left in regulation. The Red Demons allowed only one field goal after tying the game.
“I thought our kids responded there when we could have lost that ballgame; but I think there was some pride came into play,” Hamilton said. “There are a lot of people that played who helped in it.”
Hayden Coker led Liberal (6-14, 1-7) with nine points and six boards, while Elmer Quintana added seven in the loss.
The Red Demons scored the first six points of the game, but Liberal fought back to cut the margin down to 12-8 after the opening quarter. The margin stayed around four until the final two minutes when the Redskins scored five of the last seven points to cut its deficit to 22-21 at halftime.
Dodge City was able to push ahead in the third quarter to 35-27 before the Redskins started their push to get back in the game and setting up the final march by the Red Demons.
“It doesn’t matter; we’re on the road,” Hamilton said. “It’s not like they’re coming to our house.”
