The Dodge City Lady Demons couldn't find an answer to slowing down the defending Class 6A girls state champion Wichita South Lady Titans in a 63-21 road loss Friday night in the sub-state final.
The Lady Demons didn't make a field goal for the first six minutes of the contest and never could get on track against the top-seeded Lady Titans.
"They are very disciplined and shot the ball well against our defense," said Dodge City head coach Kelley Snodgrass. "You're giving up inches in every position against a good team and they showed they are a good team. We took our lumps, but we just have to remember what we have done this season and keep our heads up high.
"The future is bright. We are going to miss our seniors and they are going to be hard to replace; but we had a strong season, especially towards the end. The girls responded and I'm very pleased with how far we've come. With their work ethic, we're only going to go up."
Chandra Sain led Dodge City (12-10) with seven points, while Katrina Roenfeldt and Jessie Harshberger scored four points apiece in the loss. Dodge City was nine of 28 from the field, committed 21 turnovers and were outrebounded 26-13 by the taller South squad.
Kendrian Elliott dominated on both ends of the floor for the Lady Titans (21-1) with 21 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots. Eledria Franklin and Kirea Rogers added 11 points apiece and Patriece Dodson scored 10 as South shot 26-of-41 from the field to earn the trip to next week's state tournament.
The Lady Titans scored the first nine points of the contest and led Dodge City 16-2 before the Lady Demons made a basket (the only Lady Demon points coming from free throws by Baily Shelor). Elliott and Franklin scored eight points apiece in the opening stanza.
South was able to extend the lead to 22 by the midway point of the second period and led 35-13 at halftime.
Elliott scored 14 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Lady Titans, while Sain scored five and was the only player with more than two points for Dodge City before intermission. The Lady Demons were 5-of-17 from the field (with four shots blocked by South) and committed 11 turnovers in the first half.
Dodge City still couldn't find an answer in stopping Elliott, who scored the first seven points for the Lady Titans in the third quarter. The Lady Demons trailed 54-21 going into the final quarter.
The Lady Demons didn't score in the final quarter as the game went to a running clock per KSHSAA rules when a team is leading by 30 or more going into the final eight minutes of play.
