A tractor training program will be held on April 5, 2014 from 8:30 a.m. until approximately 5:30 p.m. at the Harvey County Courthouse. This course will not be offered again until 2016. This program will allow 14 and 15 year old youth to work on a farm other than one owned or operated by their parents.
Enrollment will be taken at the K-State Research and Extension, Harvey County, basement of the courthouse. There is a $20 enrollment fee for the course, and class materials must be picked up before the class. Enrollment deadline is March 28.
Certain occupations in agriculture were declared to be hazardous for the employment of children below the age of 16. Hazardous occupations in agriculture (tractor safety) was made allowing the employment of 14 and 15 year-olds in certain hazardous agriculture occupations when they have completed formal training programs in the safe use of farm tractors and machinery. Students will need to attend the course, pass a written test, and complete two hours of practical tractor driving experience on their own in order to receive their certificate.
Although the course is designed to meet the needs of those youth who wish to work on a farm other than their parents, it is open to anyone of any age interested in learning about farm safety, or youth who will be working on their parent's farms.
