The Dodge City Lady Demons had their chances to open up conference play with a huge win over the Hays Lady Indians, but the visitors took advantage at certain points of the contest to score a 2-1 overtime victory in Western Athletic Conference play at Memorial Stadium.
"We've come a long way from last year and we're playing a lot better," said Dodge City head coach Charles Johnson. "I'm proud of the effort that was there. I was just dsiappointed where we had some mental lapses.
"The girls dominanted most of the game. We just need to stay focused the whole game and finish stronger."
The Lady Demons took a 1-0 lead going into halftime on a goal by Scarlett Real on an assist by Cynthia Rodela. Andrea Estrada was able to keep Dodge City ahead with a save just as the first half ended.
Hays took control of the game in the second half and tied the game when Wendy Zimmerman had a breakaway and pushed the ball past Estrada in the 48th minute.
The two squads had a number of chances through the rest of the stanza, but neither could convert to send the game into overtime.
The winning goal came on a corner kick after a counterattack in the 87th minute. The ball went through the penalty area before being kicked for the goal by the Lady Indians' Talyn Klewewo.
"Estrada is playing much better, we just let her down by letting the Hays player get open to score the goal in the overtime."
The Lady Demons return to action Thursday night with another home contest against Thomas More Prep. Kickoff is set for 5:45 p.m.
