  • Senior Austin Weiser struck out 10 and the Dodge City Red Demons worked the plate and the bases early on the way to a 6-2 victory over the Garden City Buffaloes on Pack the Park Night at Demon Field.
Weiser improved to 3-0 on the season with the win. He gave up seven hits and only one walk for the Red Demons in the non-conference game against their rivals.
"You just have to throw strikes and let your defense make the plays," Weiser said. "This was the most fans I've ever pitched in front of and it was a lot of fun."
DCHS head coach Daniel Rogers said he was overall pleased with the Red Demons (6-1), but saw some points where being lackadaisical was a problem at the plate, on the base paths and in coaching as well after his team had built the big lead.
"We played well pitching and defense the whole game," Rogers said. "We got too relaxed at the plate and made a couple of baserunning mistakes. I also made a mistake in trying to send a runner home on a short fly ball.
"Still, it feels good to beat Garden City. They're not a bad team."
The Red Demons didn't commit any errors in the win and have only seven all season.
Garden City fell to 4-5 on the season.
Dodge City got their first four batters on base in the bottom of the first after the Buffaloes stranded two in the top half of the frame. Andrew Balderaz, Jackson Oldham and Weiser all walked to begin the inning. Balderaz scored when a throwing error in trying to throw out Oldham at second base before Gideon Wells hit a RBI single.
Two more runs came from two Garden City errors on one play and a RBI single by Drew Chance closed out the scoring.
The Red Demons made the score 6-0 in the third inning when Dawson Davis scored and credited with a stolen base at home as Bryce Unruh was tagged out at second base.
All of the runs were charged to Garden City starting pitcher Ivan Gutierrez.
The Buffaloes scored both of their runs in the sixth inning on a RBI single by Mario Montoya and another on a double play after the first three Garden City batters got hits.
The Red Demons return to action Friday with a doubleheader against Wichita Southeast starting at 4 p.m. on Demon Field.
