  • Dodge City Law running back Dominique Carson is like a Corvette: small and built for speed.
Carson put the pedal to the metal to make a number of big plays for the Law in their 58-41 victory over the Lincoln Haymakers in CPIFL action Saturday night at United Wireless Arena.
The back was able to make Haymaker defender miss tackle after tackle and find the open path for more yardage in the contest. Carson had 172 total yards in the win. He ran a 50-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and also scored on a 16-yard run, both in the Law's 24-point second quarter. Six of the nine times Carson handled the ball went for double digits in yardage with 135 of his yardage in before intermission to help the Law build a 41-30 lead by halftime.
"I had good practices and I usually can get out of anything," Carson said. "We stayed up-tempo. The line blocked well and the receivers blocked well. After that, it's just the running backs and D.D. (Holyfield) and I help each other.
"I also want to thank the special teams for the blocking."
Holyfield ran for 67 yards and a touchdown for the Law (4-3), while quarterback Joshua Floyd was efficient, completing 12-of-16 passes for 159 yards and three touchdowns. The Dodge City offense didn't have any turnovers in the contest after three turnovers were either scored on or led to scores in the loss at Salina.
The Law defense gave up 275 yards in total offense and only had one sack in the game; but only 86 yards were in the second half as Dodge City players were able to overcome the Haymakers' trick style offense.
"They did a lot of stuff we hadn't seen before; but it comes down to doing our job," said defensive lineman Jarret Billbrey. "We settled down after the start of the game and got to what Law football is all about. Their quarterback was making quick throws early in the game, but then he started to slow down and we were able to go after him.
Lincoln quarterback Chuck Wright was 21-of-36 for and four touchdown passes to Nick Rhodes; but three were in the first half. Rhodes caught nine passes for 138 yards for the Haymakers (2-5).
The Law special teams got in on the fun as well in the win.
Dodge City's second touchdown came when Walner Leandre blocked a field goal attempt by Lincoln kicker Benny Hanaphy and recovered in the end zone for a touchdown. Kicker Alex Fambrough also kicked three field goals in the contest.
Law head coach Sean Ponder was pleased with the overall effort of the Law after working hard in practice to try to numb the sting of losing its last road game at Salina.
Page 2 of 2 - "We were able to run our offense well and special teams played phenomenal," Ponder said. "The defense did the things they needed to do and made stops when we needed them."
