The Dodge City Athletics fell for the second straight night to the Hays Larks, this time 11-5 in Jayhawk League action at Cavalier Field.

Hays scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning off losing reliever Ryan Hand. Hand wasn't able to record an out in suffering the defeat.

The loss spoiled the hitting display by Dalton Thomas, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Athletics (10-14, 5-14) and was a home run short of the cycle.

Ian Bentley was the winning pitcher for Hays (17-9, 12-9), throwing six innings and giving up all five runs and eight hits by Dodge City.

The Larks got on the board in the top of the first on a RBI single by Derek Birginske before Thomas answered for Dodge City in the bottom of the frame with a run-scoring triple.

Hays made the score 2-1 on a dropped fly ball from leftfielder Dan Pellinen; but the Athletics scored three in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-2 lead.

Thomas had a RBI single by Dalton Thomas and Sam Capielano scored on a Larks error during the play. Ben Craft followed with another run-scoring single.

The score became tied at 4-4 in the fifth on a two-run single by Zair Koeiman before Hays took the lead with their scoring barrage in the sixth. Aaron Cornell hit a double and Ty Detmer followed with a two-run double for the Larks. Koeiman and Leffler hit RBI singles to close out the scoring.

Dodge City got a run back in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI single by Brennan Bozeman; but the Larks were able to get the lead back up to six in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Koeiman and an error on a sacrifice bunt.

The Athletics return tonight for another Jayhawk League game at Cavalier, this time against the Liberal BeeJays. The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
