  • Pittman's jump at start enough for Boothill Showdown win

  • Daryn Pittman knew the 30-lap feature in Friday's World of Outlaws Boothill Showdown was going to come down to the restart and he was able to get the inside of the front row after polesitter Sammy Swindell had a rollover on the second turn.
Pittman was able to get the jump off of Paul McMahan to get his second straight feature win and third overall victory at Dodge City Raceway Park. The winner said the conditions of the track made it difficult for racers to pass, so the jump that got him the lead was crucial in claiming the feature.
"I didn't know if I was going to win the start, but I knew whoever won the start was probably going to be hard to beat," Pittman, the defending Outlaws series champion, said. "We knew the track was wet, but we didn't expect it to be that wet; and it actually got wetter as the night wore on.
"(DCRP general manager) Tommy's (Estes Jr.) goal was just not to let it lay rubber, which we were all thanking him for that; but he may have just went a little too far. When you talk about track conditions, it's gambling and you don't know what to do because it's not an exact science. We applaud his effort, but it just wasn't the widest, best race."
Swindell had been running well in earlier races Friday night, winning his heat and the dash to get the pole going into the feature; but his car hooked into the track and rolled over four times in front of McMahan, stopping the race before the first lap was recorded. Swindell was unhurt in the accident.
Pittman charged ahead of McMahan on the restart. The only drama came for second place as McMahan was briefly challenged by Kerry Madsen, but the Australian settled for third. Five-time DCRP Outlaws champion Joey Saldana finished fourth and Jason Sides placed fifth.
Donny Schatz, who is leading this season's Outlaw series, finished ninth and Steve Kinser finished 11th in the penultimate race before Saturday's event.
Saldana had the fastest qualifying lap at 12.659 seconds. Pittman and McMahan also won heat races, while Josh Hodges won the B-feature.
The races with the Colorado Lightning class and vintage cars will start at 7:30 p.m.
