  • Bareback bronc Casey Colletti had a knee injury that required surgery and made him miss the most of May and part of June to recover.
The Colorado cowboy hasn't shown any rust since his return and is making a run for the Dodge City Roundup Rodeo belt buckle after recording an 85 in the first performance Wednesday night.
Colletti — who injured his medial collateral ligament in his right leg at last year's National Finals Rodeo but continued to compete for four months before his surgery — drew Painted Coast for his first go in the event. The rider and horse both exploded out of the chute on the way to getting the high score of the night in the event.
"This has been one of the best year I've had despite the injury," Colletti said. "Everything happens for a reason and I try to think of the positive side. I have done good here and I've done bad. I had been on that horse one time before and won the round. The horse is outstanding.
"I would like to win this rodeo one year and I hope it is this year."
Casey Breuer is tied with Colletti after the first night, also scoring an 85 on Hot Valley. Orin Larsen is third in the standings at 81.
Tyler Smith took the early lead in the bull riding. Smith recorded an 84 on the bounty bull of the night, Elise Said What. Two others recorded scores in the first go of the event with four-time World champion J.W. Harris scoring an 83 on Harlem Nights and Trent Cormier getting a 75 on Lady Gaga.
Cody Wright led the saddle bronc event with an 85 on Kate's Hot Sister. World champion Taos Muncy and Isaac Diaz are tied for second with scores of 82.
Bray Armes was able to waddle through the mud to earn a two-head time of 9.0 seconds to lead in the steer wrestling event. Casey Martin is second (10.1) an Kait Kvistad third at 11.1.
Miles Baker and Dustin Searcy lead the team roping event with a 17.0 seconds on two runs. The only other team that was able to complete two runs was Landon McClaugherty and Caleb Twisselman (22.8).
Jeffi Fish used two second place finishes in the first two rounds to take the early lead in barrel racing. The Tennessean has a combined time of 36.48 seconds, which is .32 of a second ahead of Sarah Rose McDonald and Jane Melby.
