  • It's been a rough two years for bull rider Jacob O'Mara ever since winning the Dodge City Roundup Rodeo in 2011.
Injury had kept O'Mara out of the rodeo in 2012 and 2013, so the Louisiana cowboy feels like he is defending his championship this season. He made his stand for another Roundup buckle after recording an 83 on Strawberry to move into a tie for third place going into tonight's short go.
"I have some history here when I won it and I was excited when I showed up and I knew I had a good bull," O'Mara said. "This is a cowboy town where all the cowboys were back in the day and the fans are great and pack this place every night."
O'Mara wasn't the only person to move into striking distance for a buckle.
Defending Roundup bull rider Clayton Foltyn also made a strong case in repeating after recording an 81 on Under The Radar; while Richmond Chapman moved into third in the bareback riding with an 84 ride on Pine Cone.
Better conditions on the arena floor that was still recovering from Wednesday's rainstorm that dumped more than two inches of rain saw Christine Laughlin, Kaley Bass and Cheyenne Shipps move into the top three of the aggregate of barrel racing. Laughlin leads with 34.65 on two runs, with Bass (34.82) and Shipps (34.89) right behind. The top eight in tonight's short-go ran their first two runs Saturday.
Marshall Leonard and Caddo Lewallen are tied for a tie for third in the aggregate going into tonight with times of 23.5 seconds, half a second behind the leaders. Lewallen finished second after the completion of the first round with an 11.3 run during slack; while Leonard was second in the final second round standings with a 9.2 run in the arena.
