  • The annual Watermelon Scrimmage at Memorial Stadium takes a different feel for the members of the Dodge City Red Demons football team, as it is the first time they get to show their abilities under the light and in front of their fans.
The offense beat the defense 36-28 on the scoreboard and DCHS football head coach Dave Foster was looking at individuals making big plays. The coach said he saw those plays on both sides of the ball.
"It's tough to tell until we see the film; but in reality, we saw enough bright points and felt good about it," Foster said. "We feel good both offensively and defensively.
"I feel good leaving this, about as good as I have felt in a long time."
Foster didn't single anybody out as a surprise by their play Friday night, but he said it was an overall good scrimmage.
"We switched about seven or eight guys we wanted to look at on the other side," Foster said. "We're still confident that we have a place, but we wanted to see if we wanted to use them at some other place.
"You can't surprise me on game night because we see it in practice. I tell the players that they will perform like they practice; so there will be no surprises on game night."
The game used a spring format scoring that Foster believes is used in University of Oklahoma games. Scoring on offense was traditional; but the defense earned points for turnovers, fourth down stops, three and outs, and missed field goals. Foster said it helps in making a competitive scrimmage.
"We tried to make things a little more interesting as we alternated the varsity and junior varsity," Foster said. "We knew we have some battles up front, so we're going to have to keep people off balanced and try to wear down bigger and faster defensive lines."
However, the game wasn't the only thing Foster was focused on as it was also the debut of the new videoboard at the stadium.
"I kept wanting to watch the TV since it's better than in my house and I just kept looking down and seeing points going up," Foster said.
The Red Demons will open up their season next Friday with a home contest against Wichita West. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
