The Dodge City Law will play three of its six home games in the month of March in the Champions Indoor Football league schedule released Wednesday afternoon.
"If I had a choice of playing an extra game in March or May, I'd pick March because school is still going on," Law co-owner/general manager Richard Bertz said. "Overall, we definitely have a mix of playing new teams and those we have played before. It's going to be a tough schedule, but I think we're going to build on what we accomplished last year."
Bertz said the schedule had been delayed after the league went from 12 to nine after the planned two expansion teams fell through and the team in Gary, Ind., was not prepared due to internal issues. He expected that a conference call between the owners today will probably determine that the league will go back to one division instead of the planned two divisions before dropping Gary.
The Law will open the season against the Amarillo Venom on March 7 at United Wireless Arena, with other home games in the month against Sioux City (March 14) and New Mexico (March 14). The remainder of the home games is against Omaha (April 18), Salina (May 2), and then over a month break before the final game in June, also against Sioux City (June 6).
"It probably has to do with them not having to travel too far south," Bertz said about having Sioux City playing here twice. "I believe us playing Sioux City twice helps us because they have been a team in the (CPIFL) championship game two years in a row and it would factor in that after head-to-head, the next tiebreaker is strength of schedule and they have a good team every year."
The Law will also play at Salina and Wichita. Dodge City does not get a home game against Wichita this season.
"It is what it is. You kind of work around other teams for dates," Bertz said. "Out of all the things on the schedule, it would have been nice to have a home and away game with Wichita; but it's just the way it worked out."
The Law will be having their open tryouts on Sunday afternoon at the Western State Bank Arena. Doors are open at 11:30 a.m. and the tryout starts from 1-4 p.m.
