The Dodge City Law defense looked like they weren't going to be able to stop the San Angelo Bandits in their Champions Indoor Football league showdown at Foster Stadium.
But the unit made the big stops in the fourth quarter -- including a final stand with less than two minutes left in the game -- as the Law held on to beat the Bandits 47-45 for the road victory.
The Law defense gave up over 200 yards of offense for the third straight game, but their fourth quarter defensive stands allowed Dodge City to stay in the contest.
A one-yard touchdown by quarterback Joshua Floyd with 1:26 left put the Law (2-1) up for good; but the defense was put with their backs to the wall after a penalty gave the Bandits the ball at the Law 15. San Angelo could only muster three yards and Jared Wood, who kicked for the Law in the latter part of last season, missed a 25-yard field goal to seal the Dodge City victory. The Law defense made a crucial stop in the previous series after Floyd had thrown an interception with the Bandits up four; but the home offense was stopped on a fourth down play, setting up the winning drive for Dodge City. After giving up 196 total yards in the first three quarters, the Law gave up only 22 yards in the final stanza to keep their team in the game. San Angelo was 5-for-7 in third down conversions in the first three quarters, but were unsuccessful in their two third down tries in the final period.
Floyd finished 13-of-20 for 126 yards and two touchdowns to Maurice Young (a 6-yard score in the first and a 25-yard catch in the third); and also had two rushing touchdowns in the win. Running backs KingJack Washington and Dominique Carson combined for 76 rushing yards and three touchdowns in the game. Brendon Crawford finished 12-of-21 for 111 yards and a touchdown; while Brannon Hatley ran for 56 yards and three scores for the Bandits (0-2). Both teams scored on their first two possessions, but missed opportunities in the second quarter to add to their points -- Dodge City lost the ball on downs deep in Bandit territory and San Angelo missed a field goal to end the first half -- to make the score 14-14 at halftime. Both offenses came out hot in the second half with each scoring three touchdowns on their first three possessions of the third quarter, but a missed extra point gave San Angelo a 35-34 lead. A 25-yard field goal by Wood gave the Bandits a 38-34 lead going into the final quarter. A 6-yard touchdown run by Washington was answered with a 5-yard scoring run from Hadley; setting up the Law's defensive stands. The Bandits got the ball into Law territory after Floyd's final touchdown with the help of a facemask penalty. The potential game winning field goal sailed left to seal the win for the Law. The Law return to United Wireless Arena for its next league game against the Texas Revolution. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. _ _ _
