Sure, the recent popularity of the “green” movement may seem relegated to the coasts and larger cities. But farmers across America have long understood the importance of conserving water while simultaneously trying to improve yields.
Judicious water usage becomes even more important as you get into the Midwest, where irrigation often isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity. In an effort to save farmers money, as well as cut down on dwindling water reserves, Servi-Tech, Inc.; John Deere Water; and Fontanelle Hybrids have teamed together to offer a new irrigation management system to their clients.
The three companies will offer farmers a chance to not only get their hands on the highest-yield hybrids, but also receive installation of the Aqua View irrigation monitoring system, as well as a year of consultation from one of Servi-Tech’s certified agronomists.
Servi-Tech CEO Mitch Counce praised the partnership as another step forward for the Dodge City, Kan.-based company. Servi-Tech recently began exploring ways to further expand its services past its core: crop consulting and laboratory work.
To qualify for the offer, clients must purchase a minimum of 50 units of Fontanelle-brand corn each year for three years. The corn must then be planted under a center pivot, although flood irrigation is also allowed. The companies will then provide a probe and water-consulting services for qualifying acreage — valued close to $3,200.
Ron Gardner, regional sales manager for Fontanelle, emphasized during a recent training session in Dodge City that the partnership would not turn Servi-Tech’s crop consultants into salesmen for Fontanelle Hybrids. Rather, he said, it was one more avenue for farmers to take advantage of Servi-Tech’s unbiased expertise in water management.
Early responses from Kansas, Nebraska and Texas farmers who have participated in the program have been overwhelmingly positive.
Servi-Tech was organized in 1975 by three farmer-owned cooperatives to provide technical service for agricultural producers in southwest Kansas. Today, Servi-Tech provides consulting to approximately 1,700 farmers across seven states and 140 counties with over 1 million acres under contract.
