The Conqs just can't win, both literally and figuratively.
A week after hosting preseason first-team All-American running back Chad Winbush and the then-No. 12 ranked Cardinals of Trinity Valley, head coach Bob Majeski and the Dodge City Community College Conquistadors football team then had to turn around Saturday and welcome the two-time defending NJCAA national champions in the Butler County Grizzlies.
Butler took little sympathy on Dodge's tough opening schedule, leaving the Conqs with its second straight home loss, 51-7.
Today, when the NJCAA Region VI, Division I volleyball tournament begins in Dodge City, any team will have a shot at the championship.
“In the past, you can pick and point who will be number one,” Dodge City Community College volleyball coach Shaun Pohlman said. “But this year, it’s not the case. It’s been fairly competitive all season. There is no certainty, which makes for good volleyball.”
The Dodge City Community College board of trustees had a particularly fruitful meeting Wednesday. The board named Dr. Jason Joy, a local chiropractor who is himself a community college graduate, to fill the seat of long-term member Bill Austen, who passed away last July.
Dodge City Community College didn't experience much growth over the past couple of years.
The Dodge City Community College Conquistadors volleyball team improved to 4-2 overall on the season and 1-1 in Jayhawk Conference play after a 4-1 performance in the Colby Classic tournament at Colby Community College over the weekend.
Both the Dodge City Community College Conquistadors men's and women's soccer teams lost their season openers against rival Garden City Wednesday at Memorial Stadium.
The women's team dropped its game to the Broncbusters 1-0 on a goal in the final three minutes of regulation, while the men lost 6-2 to the No. 4-ranked Garden team.
The show must go on.
Head coach Shaun Pohlman and the Dodge City Community College Conquistadors volleyball team encountered a road block in their trek to success in the 2009 season last Wednesday when five members suffered injuries in a car accident.
As a result, Pohlman and the Conqs were unable to travel to Roswell, N.M. for their season opener against Frank Phillips over the weekend.
But Wednesday, with its team captain, outside hitter Janelle Burnett, sidelined for the season with a grade-four concussion, Dodge had to sort through the adversity and the loss of its team leader as it hosted Jayhawk Conference-foe Barton County.
The Conqs, however, were unable to regroup in time as they lost to the Cougars 25-17, 25-15, 28-26.
Retribution will be on the minds of head coach Tim Romanello and the members of the Dodge City Community College Conquistadors men's soccer team Wednesday as they open the season at home against rival Garden City.
The Conqs, who lost to the Broncbusters twice last season, including a 17-0 lashing to close out their 2008 campaign, will look to improve their 2-11-1 mark of a year ago.
If there was such a thing as a moral victory, the Dodge City Community College Conquistadors football team got one Saturday.
The Conqs opened the 2009 season with a 27-13 loss to the No. 12-ranked Cardinals of Trinity Valley Saturday, an improvement from the 48-0 lopsided defeat Dodge suffered to those same Cardinals in last season's opener.
Dodge City Community College Conquistadors head volleyball coach Shaun Pohlman's season of continued improvement in 2009 got a little harder last week.
Five members of the 14-player volleyball team were involved in a car accident Wednesday evening at the corner of 14th Avenue and Spruce Street, by the Best Western hotel. As a result, the Conqs were unable to travel to Roswell, N.M., for their season opener Friday against Frank Phillips in the New Mexico Military Institute Classic Tournament.
Aug. 29.
That date has been circled on Dodge City Community College Conquistadors head football coach Bob Majeski's calendar for quite some time, and it is finally here.
Saturday at 7 p.m. the lights at Memorial Stadium will come on and the ball will go up as Majeski and the Conqs open the 2009 season against the Cardinals of Trinity Valley Community College (Texas).
