GREAT BEND —

The Dodge City Community College Conquistador women's basketball team dropped its tenth straight game Saturday night to the Barton County Cougars 89-37 in Great Bend.
Dodge City went into the game with only six players suited up for the Jayhawk Conference matchup. In addition to losing their leading scorer for the rest of the season, the Conqs were without the services of point guard Marcella Sedoc, who is questionable for the remainder of the season with an injured right hand.
Despite the limited number of players, the Conqs competed with the Cougars, for awhile. Three and one half minutes into the game the score was tied 4-4.
Barton County then went on an 18-2 run. The Cougar scoring spurt was fueled by an effective full court zone press that gave the Conqs fits. Dodge City committed 23 turnovers in the first half. Many of the turnovers led to fast break points for Barton County.
Barton County led at the intermission, 37 - 16.
The second half was all Barton County. With more coaches on the bench than substitute players, Dodge City simply ran out of gas.
Dodge City head coach Steve High said he was proud that his team didn't give up.
“Our kids didn't quit. They didn't lay down. They competed until the final buzzer, and that's all you can ask of them,” High said. “We're all disappointed we lost. We are all disappointed by the amount that we lost, but I'm proud of the fact that we continued to compete.”
Barton County sophomore Courtney Sturdivant led all scorers with 17 points. Three other Cougars scored in double figures:  Shelby Hillman had 13, Tressie Todd netted 11, and Danielle Bird chipped in with 10.
Barton County head coach Jill Barclay saw her team pick up their first conference win of the season.
“I know that Dodge City is struggling, but X's and O's, coach High did what he could with the team,” Barclay said.  “We wanted to make sure that, whether Dodge had four people or forty people, that we tried to stick with our game and I felt like our kids did that for most of the game.”
Freshman Robin Parker continued to improve her play and just missed a double-double, scoring 13 points and pulling down nine rebounds for Dodge City. Nekea Sims had her most productive outing as she also scored 13 for the Conqs.
“We've got to work to get high percentage shots. We're not very big and without the depth that other teams have, so we've got to make the shots we get,” High said. “When you turn the ball over 33 times, that limits the shot opportunities that you have.”
With the loss Dodge City drops to 4-13 on the season and 0-3 in conference play. The Conqs try again for their first conference victory when they play host to Colby Wednesday.
“Colby is in a little bit of the same situation we're in,” High said. “Unless they have added somebody at semester, they have seven players. We hope we can get our first conference win of the year at home on Wednesday night.”
Tip off is set for 5:30 at the Civic Center.
