DODGE CITY —

Although the first day of school is just around the corner, it's still summer in Dodge City. It's still hot, it's still sticky, and even summer's biggest young fans are starting to get a little cranky. Some have even been overheard complaining that there's nothing interesting left to do.
But the children who spent Wednesday afternoon in the Dodge City Public Library didn't seem to have those problems. The air conditioning worked just fine, and nobody had to wait for a computer. The room was filled with books, CDs, board games and drawing materials, and a huge blue airplane hung suspended from the ceiling.
Benjamin Turner and his little sister, Abigail, waited in line to check out their books. At 7, Ben knows what kind of books he wants to read, where to find them and how to check them out.
"I like just looking around at all the books when I come in here," he said. "But I know where the books I like are, so then I just go straight to that shelf and get them."
