Braced for more huge funding cuts that are widely predicted to cripple Kansas schools over the next few years, the Dodge City school board will decide tonight whether to ask its former attorneys for a presentation of USD 443's options, in the event that the board decides to take legal action.
Alan Rupe and John Robb successfully represented Schools for Fair Funding in the landmark Kansas Supreme Court case Montoy v. Kansas, which forced a defiant Legislature to approve a $755.6 million increase in school funding, dispersed over a three-year period that will end June 30.
If the school board follows the recommendation of the USD 443 administration, Rupe and Robb will travel to Dodge City to make a formal presentation to the board next month. Two board members will also be designated to represent District 443 when Schools for Fair Funding meets on July 24.
No legal action in relation to school funding is currently being planned.
