DODGE CITY —

Over two decades ago when Edward Hammond took over the helm of Fort Hays State University, he decided to travel around the entire state of Kansas, telling people about the college.
He's still doing it. In fact, President Hammond makes the trip every year.
On Monday, he pulled into Dodge City for the 23rd time. He seemed quite at home here, as indeed he was - Dodge may be a 2 hour drive from Fort Hays, but our town is still part of Hammond's turf, and he keeps up with what's happening here. Droves of Dodge kids head off to Fort Hays when they graduate from our high school and from Dodge City Community College, so Hammond meets Tigers wherever he goes.
A lot has changed over the years, both at Fort Hays and throughout Kansas, but some things have remained constant.  Fort Hays is still the only university in western Kansas, Hammond is still its president, its tuition is still under $100 per credit hour, and the school is still the four-year standard bearer for our region.
