DODGE CITY —

If you were born without arms, it would be understandable if you held a little grudge against God. Or you could take a different perspective and choose to celebrate life and faith.
Tony Melendez's choice is clear. He chooses life.
In fact, he has chosen to do whatever he can to reach out to young people who don't go to church and bring them a message: "Go to Mass, bring your parents, meet God."
Melendez wasn't interested in attending church as a youngster, but his parents insisted. He now recognizes the value of the example they set.
When Melendez expressed interest in becoming a priest, he hit another brick wall. It's not possible to celebrate the Eucharist without a thumb and a forefinger.
Rather than give up, he found another outlet for his desire to minister: music.
Having already mastered a number of skills with his "Who needs arms?" attitude, Melendez learned to play the guitar with his feet.
Starting small, the power and appeal of Melendez's message has taken him on some remarkable journeys. After a performance in 1987 in Los Angeles, Pope John Paul II embraced Melendez and told him, "My wish to you is to continue giving this hope to all the people."
And continue he does. You'll find several videos of Melendez on YouTube, including an impressive full-court Frisbee shot that brings a gym full of kids to their feet.
Melendez is bringing his story and his music to Dodge City this weekend. His powerful vocal and instrumental performance is scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe on North 14th Avenue.
Tickets may be purchased in advance at church offices in Liberal, Garden City and Dodge City, but they will also be available at the door until 4:45 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10, but children 10 and under are free.
For more information, visit Melendez's Web site, www.tonymelendez.com, or call (620) 225-4802.
