There's a lot of theater happening in Kansas City this season, and three of the city's most popular venues demonstrate the wide variety of offerings.
Kansas City Rep
As part of the Rep's revamping of the organization, which included changing the name a few seasons back from The Missouri Repertory to the Kansas City Repertory, the Rep has been working hard to retain its patron base while expanding its appeal to a younger, hipper audience.
Two upcoming productions, both set in the Kansas City area, reflect the Rep's new image:
• "Broke-ology," by Kansas City native Nathan Jackson, tells the story of a family in crisis as an older brother must decide whether to continue with plans of going to college when his father is diagnosed with a serious illness.
Described as "thematically rich, structurally deft and emotionally complex" by the Boston Globe, the play is recommended for teens and up. It opens Feb. 19 at the Rep's downtown Sprint Copaken Stage theater.
• "Bus Stop," by William Inge, Kansas native and Pulitzer Prize winner, takes place when a March blizzard traps eight strangers in a small cafe 30 miles east of Kansas City. Lives are changed. Love is lost and found. The blizzard rages on.
