Dodge City Days offers plenty of opportunities for fun, from the Western parade to the wacky trikes race.
Some activities boast opportunities to win big prizes, including the Daily Globe's medallion hunt and the Wendy's cash giveaway.
But only one event combines fun, cash prizes and a makeshift river.
If that combination piques your interest, head down to the Great Quack Attack rubber duck race, set for 2 p.m. Sunday in Wright Park.
Approximately 4,000 ducks will float down the river, and the first one to cross the finish line will earn $3,500 for the lease-holder. If the lucky person is present and wearing a Dodge City Days lapel pin, the prize will double to $7,000.
The second-place duck will win $1,500 for its lease-holder. Third place gets $1,000, and fourth receives $700. In each case, the prize money will double if the holder is present with a lapel pin.
Even if your duck doesn't finish in the top four, you could still be in the money.
Several losing ducks will be plucked from the water at random and dubbed AFLAC hard-luck ducks. The lease-holders for those ducks will take home $100 apiece.
The event is a fundraiser for The Alley teen center and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ford County, which will split the proceeds from lease sales.
"For The Alley, this is our one and only fundraiser," Alley director Brook Trenkle said Friday. "The duck sales essentially are what keep the doors open at The Alley."
She said proceeds from the fundraiser cover the center's operating costs, not salaries.
Buying in
Time is running out, but there are still some opportunities to join the race.
The Alley will sell duck leases during today's barbecue contest at Wright Park and the country music concert at Roundup Arena. If you miss either of those opportunities, you can buy a duck until noon Sunday at Wright Park.
People can lease either one duck for $10 or a "six-quack" for $50.
Trenkle said lease sales were brisk, particularly over the last few days.
"I think now that Dodge City Days is happening, we're in the week of, people are getting more excited and they're wanting to purchase their ducks," she said. "And so, it's been good. It's been busy."
