Next to Thanksgiving and Christmas, Valentine’s Day is my favorite ‘foods’ holiday.  Chocolate to me is like kryptonite to Superman. Chocolate is the most popular gift for sweethearts to give each other on Valentine’s Day, but others choose to go the low/no calorie route and send flowers.
Thousands of flowers and roses will be given as gifts this year.  If you are given flowers, show your appreciation by making them last as long as possible.  If you are unable to place flowers in water right away, keep them in a cool place until you can get them in water
For roses and loose stem flowers, fill a deep, clean vase with water and add the flower food or preservative that came with the flowers. Carefully remove the leaves that will be below the waterline once the flowers are placed in the vase.  Leaves that left in the water will promote bacterial growth and will cause the flowers to wilt and fade faster.  Place the stems of the flowers under water and carefully cut the ends off at an angle with a sharp knife. Avoid using scissors as this crushes the stem ends and prevents them from taking up adequate water.   Place them in the vase and enjoy.
