After speaking at the 2011 Latino Student Leadership Conference, Madai Rivera, K-State admissions coordinator of Hispanic recruitment, was approached by several students.
One student was interested in inviting Rivera to speak with her parents about college. Rivera recognized a need to address questions from students and parents, so she had an idea for what she calls "Bilingual Information Night."
Families are invited to "Bilingual Information Night" at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Dodge City Public Library. This is be the second year K-State faculty is hosting Bilingual Information Night, with a goal of turning it into an annual event.
Rivera and two of her colleagues, Bill Disberger, assistant director of admissions, and Leigh Luina, admissions representative, will address all questions by guests. Bilingual Information Night will be in both English and Spanish. Refreshments and door prizes will be provided.
"We want to bring awareness about the process of enrolling in colleges or universities," Rivera said. "We ask parents when they think about their child going to college, what questions do they have?"
According to Rivera, they had a good turnout last year with approximately 45 students and parents.
"Last year we noticed a lot of interest," she said. "A lot of families are interested in college, they just don't know where to start. We want to help guide them."
Rivera said the biggest concern she picked up from parents last year was cost, and students expressed concerns about academics.
"I had a young man attend who was interested in enrolling for a master's program," Rivera said. "He had just moved from  Mexico and wasn't sure about how to enter a master's program in U.S. I connected him with several programs, and he is now at K-State, pursuing a master's in engineering."
K-State faculty members will also cover topics such as
• Cost.
• How to prepare your student for college now.
• Scholarships.
• Information about federal student aid.
• Life on campus, careers and much more.
For more information, contact Rivera at (785) 532-5529 or via email at Madai@k-state.edu.
