José Ismael Guevara is a Salvadoran immigrant who reached the American dream with hard work and a keen eye for business.
He was born in La Union Department in El Salvador and, in 1984, he arrived in Houston. There, Guevara started working with a construction contractor but he had his eye on greater accomplishments.
Guevara had a friend in Garden City who worked cleaning the slaughter floor in a meat packing plant. His friend encouraged him to move to Garden City and he did. He also began cleaning the slaughter house floors. However, because that job did not guarantee him enough income to survive with his wife and a child, he hired on with another meat packing plant doing the same job. When he finished his cleaning job in the early morning, he restarted working again at another Garden City facility.
“Keeping two jobs was very difficult for me and because of that, I began considering the possibility of owning a small business. I had an advantage because my family was small,” he said.
