Dodge seniors still dancing after 10 years

Recently, the Friends of the Zoo Committee held a summer Kickoff Festival in Wright Park at the Dodge City Zoo. The FOTZ Committee offered hot dogs, chips and soft drinks to all that attended. We gathered many, many contributions from Dodge City businesses.

Elmer E. Boehme, 93, died Thursday, June 25, 2009 at the Edwards County Hospital, Kinsley.

Donald D. Fowler, 80, died Sunday, June 28, 2009 at Trinity Manor Nursing Home at Dodge City.

Sam and Terri Thomas, Dalhart, TX, and Brad Peterson, Kinsley, and Shelly Mowry, Cimarron, announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their children, Amanda Jo Thomas and Eric Bradley Peterson. 

 Mark and Cheryl Koontz, Dodge City, are pleased to announce the engagement and upcoming marriage of their daughter, Erin, to Corey Maginley son of Ken and Pat Maginley, Wamego.
     Grandparents of the bride are Al and Irene Koechner, Wright, KS.  Grandparents of the groom are Alvin and Margaret Zeller, Paxico.

The jury in the Willis Gordon rape case took only an hour and a half Tuesday to reach a verdict.
    Guilty.
    Gordon was convicted of rape, aggravated kidnapping, attempted robbery and aggravated battery in the Feb. 2 sexual assault of a female acquaintance and an attack on her former boyfriend, Luther Foote.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday refused to consider Missouri's appeal of a court order barring the state from enforcing a law restricting protests near funerals.
    State lawmakers in 2006 enacted two new laws creating buffer zones between demonstrators and funerals and processions. The legislation targets a Topeka, Kan., church whose members have picketed outside the funerals of people killed during the Iraq war, stating that they believe soldiers are dying as divine punishment because the United States harbors homosexuals.

Nearly half of the Kansas wheat harvest is done, and while the grain industry has been disappointed by the crop's size in southern counties, yields and test weights have been much better further north.
    Crops in southern Kansas — particularly in major wheat-growing areas such as Cowley, Sumner, Harper and Barber counties — were hurt by a spring freeze, heavy rain in several areas, too little rain in others and some diseases, said Jim Shroyer, Kansas State University Extension wheat specialist.

    Both the Dodge City Rangers and Junior Rangers were victorious in their respective doubleheaders at home Tuesday.
    The Rangers defeated Larned 6-5 in game one, and then followed that with a 7-5 victory to take the series, while the Junior Rangers eked out both victories against Great Bend 8-7 and 13-12.

    The Dodge City Athletics lost to the Hays Larks Sunday to end their three-game winning streak. And after a 21-0 win in Wichita Monday, the A's dropped another one to the Larks at home Tuesday.
    Dodge fell to Hays in extra innings 7-5 after jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead after one inning of play.

The Mid America Youth Basketball Dodge City tournament blew through town like a whirlwind and wrapped up as quickly as the action got started. Pool play for the six different divisions started Friday and the championship brackets all concluded Sunday, with Dodge City teams taking medals or trophies in each division a local team was entered.

    The little dribblers were out in full force Monday and Tuesday for the Junior Demon basketball camp. The camp conducted by Dodge City High School girls' basketball coach Justin Briggs will conclude today.

Rain Saturday night and Sunday morning brought early ends to baseball tournaments at Legends Park and Demon Field over the weekend, and play was suspended at both venues.
    The tournaments were called, and the games will not be made up this summer.

  Both Dodge City Middle School Cardinal soccer teams scored ARMS League championships Tuesday after winning both games of their league tournies at St. Mary's Soccer Complex.
    Both teams came into the tournament as the No. 1 seed after strong regular seasons.
