A man charged with killing his infant son understands the proceedings against him and can help his attorney mount a defense, District Judge Leigh Hood ruled Thursday.

Recently, the Friends of the Zoo Committee held a summer Kickoff Festival in Wright Park at the Dodge City Zoo. The FOTZ Committee offered hot dogs, chips and soft drinks to all that attended. We gathered many, many contributions from Dodge City businesses.

Not only are the patrons at the Dodge  City Senior Center patient, they're also helpful — even when it comes to something that can get many people crabby, like mealtimes.  
    While they were waiting for the center to remodel its kitchen, many of the seniors took turns traveling to Minneola every day, Monday through Friday, to get hot lunches for everyone else.
    Vernon and Mary Lou Agur's day was Thursday.

Sheriff investigating vandalism at HorseThief Reservoir

HODGEMAN COUNTY —

Local authorities are looking for whoever meddled with the HorseThief Reservoir spillway controls last week, releasing about 135 million gallons of water.
    The incident apparently occurred around midnight Thursday, when U.S. Geological Survey monitoring equipment recorded a marked increase in downstream water flow.

Kansas soldier on 2nd tour killed in Afghanistan

ARKANSAS CITY —

A Kansas soldier known for his shooting expertise has been killed during an attack in Afghanistan during his second tour of duty.
    The Department of Defense announced Monday that 23-year-old Sgt. Tyler Juden was killed Saturday when enemy forces attacked his unit with rocket-propelled grenades and small-arms fire near Turan, Afghanistan.

Greensburg gunning for Clifton-Clyde

After destroying the Minneola High School Wildcats in the first round of the 8-Man, Division I playoffs on Tuesday night, the Greensburg Rangers now advance to the second round of playoffs on Saturday.
    The Rangers (6-4) will take on the Clifton-Clyde Eagles (9-1) in Greensburg at 4 p.m.
    “We’re extremely grateful for the opportunity to play” Greensburg coach Clint Young said. “It’s going to be a tough match-up. They are extremely big. But it’s the same thing as  before. We’ve got nothing to fear and nothing to lose.”

Red Demons head to state soccer

        The Dodge City Red Demons make their first-ever state appearance tonight in Overland Park. The Demons (16-3) take on the Lawrence Free State Firebirds (15-4) at 6 p.m. in the semifinals.

The Mid America Youth Basketball Dodge City tournament blew through town like a whirlwind and wrapped up as quickly as the action got started. Pool play for the six different divisions started Friday and the championship brackets all concluded Sunday, with Dodge City teams taking medals or trophies in each division a local team was entered.

Weekend rain puts early end to baseball tourneys

Rain Saturday night and Sunday morning brought early ends to baseball tournaments at Legends Park and Demon Field over the weekend, and play was suspended at both venues.
    The tournaments were called, and the games will not be made up this summer.

DCMS soccer teams both win league titles

  Both Dodge City Middle School Cardinal soccer teams scored ARMS League championships Tuesday after winning both games of their league tournies at St. Mary's Soccer Complex.
    Both teams came into the tournament as the No. 1 seed after strong regular seasons.
