The Kansas Silver Haired Legislature is seeking candidates for delegates in 28 counties before the biennial election, set for March 10.
People who are interested in becoming a candidate for the Silver Haired Legislature must be at least 60 years old, a resident of the county where they are running, and a registered voter in Kansas.
The Silver Haired Legislature meets annually to discuss and proposed legislative policy through committee hearings and floor debates. Measures that win the SHL's approval are then presented to the governor and the Legislature.
Information about nomination procedures and the necessary filing forms may be obtained from the Southwest Kansas Area Agency on Aging, which provides logistical support to the Silver Haired Legislature.
Each county should have a Silver Haired Legislator, but eight counties — Clark, Edwards, Gray, Haskell, Meade, Scott, Stafford and Stevens — were not represented last year.
All petitions, filing fees and other nomination letters are due to the SWKAAA office by 4 p.m. Feb. 11, the deadline to file for candidacy. The agency's address is SWKAAA, PO Box 1636, Dodge City, KS 67801.
For more information, contact SWKAAA's executive director, Dave Geist, at 1-800-742-9531 or (620) 225-8230.
