In about a year, Dodge City's military police training center will open to hundreds of Army reservists.
The reservists will be in town every weekend for training exercises, and their presence is expected to boost the city's economy.
"Those individuals will be coming in, and hopefully they will participate in restaurants and buy fuels and shop at the mall and maybe end up out at the casino, or go to the events center or the races," Vice Mayor Kent Smoll said Wednesday. "I think they're going to have, probably, some time at night that they'll be able to participate in Dodge City activities."
Construction trailers are already at the site of the training center, located at the northwest corner of South 14th Avenue and U.S. Highway 56 in south Dodge City. Project superintendent David Hall with Diggs Construction said that construction will begin soon and should be finished within a year.
