The USD 443 school board recently voted to commit itself to paying its share of the cost of suing the state of Kansas - as long as the total number of students enrolled in the school districts who join the litigation is at least 100,000. Right now, the 57 districts who make up Schools for Fair Funding enroll 147,358 students, but they haven't all been authorized by their boards to join the lawsuit, according to SFF president Fred Kaufman.
However, that situation will likely change — and it could happen any day now. All signs point to a rapid increase in the number of school boards ready to litigate, and that number is expected to rise after today's SFF meeting in Newton.
USD 443 Superintendent Alan Cunningham and board president Dan Reichenborn will accompany the district's director of business and operations, Bill Hammond, to the meeting. Cunningham made no bones about how the Dodge City Schools would vote.
"The issue isn't on the agenda, but that could change," he said. "And if it does, our board has authorized Mr. Reichenborn to votes yes to litigation — if we have a total of 100,000 students represented."
