DODGE CITY —

Every 10 years, Uncle Sam counts everyone in America.  he problem is, some parts of America are a lot harder to count than others. And western Kansas is one of the tough ones.
The federal government isn't too proud to admit that it's starting to get a little worried about our region. In fact, the U.S Census Bureau frankly admits that it needs help — a lot of help — to get the job done here.
The region's low unemployment rate, bolstered by its stable beef- and grain-based economy, translates into very few takers for the $10-an-hour census jobs gobbled up by unemployed workers in other parts of the country.
Not only that, it's a lot more time-consuming to count people when they are spread out all across the high plains. Once you get out of town, you can't exactly stroll door to door.
