Sturm-Ruger Firearms is donating two Vaquero pistols for the 55th anniversary of “Gunsmoke.” The pistols are in .45 Long Colt and are virtually identical to the original Peacemaker style. Both are specially prepared by Baron Engraving in Connecticut.
One is to be presented to actor and renowned Western artist Buck Taylor, who portrayed Newly O'Brien on “Gunsmoke.” It is a 4 1/2-barrel gun, with Taylor’s name engraved in gold on the barrel and his famous “Gunsmoke” hallmark with the 55th logo on the pearl grips.
The second gun is a one-of-a-kind 55th-anniversary special similar to Buck's pistol in most ways, but with the 55th anversary in gold on either side of the barrel and “Historic Dodge City, KS” engraved in gold on the top strap. Again, the 55th logo appears on the pearl grips and on the top of the back strap. There is a gold strip around the barrel tip and the rear of the cylinder.
Both pistols will be in beautiful presentation cases. While the “Buck Taylor” gun will be presented to Buck at the event banquet this evening, the 55th-anniversary gun will go up for online auction by mid-September. More auction information will be available later from the Dodge City Trail of Fame at (620) 561-1925.
The third and lower gun in the accompanying picture is a planned limited special-edition commemorative for the Dodge City Trail of Fame. There will be 50 numbered guns available through the Dodge City Trail of Fame. The price is yet to be determined. Those that do not sell immediately will go to online auction.
