Senior Center Women’s Salad Luncheon set for today

    Between 60 and 80 women are expected at the eighth annual Women’s Salad Luncheon beginning at noon today at the Dodge City Senior Center, with each woman bringing a salad of her choice to share with others.
    “Our theme this year will be pearls,” said Roxanne Hornberger, director of the senior center. “We are decorating with pearls and urging women to wear pearls to the luncheon.”
    The hostess for theluncheon will be Kelly Tassett, coordinator of Senior Friends, a wellness program for seniors age 50 and older offered through Western Plains Medical Complex. 
    Tassett has researched the history of pearls and will reveal what she has learned.
    “I will talk about pearls and why they are so priceless,” said Tassett, who also is administrative assistant at Western Plains Medical Complex. “We usually have from 60 to 80 people to attend the salad luncheon.”
    Centerpieces of vases and candles will be decorated with beads and napkins for the luncheon with pearls, and the senior center is furnishing live plants to decorate each table. 
    “RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) will bring gifts for the drawings and door prizes,” Hornberger said. “We also are asking women who attend to bring school-age childhood photos of themselves to share with other guests.  We thought that would be fun.”
    Tasset started the Mother’s Day Tea a couple of years ago as a special event for members of Senior Friends. The tea has been incorporated into the Dodge City Senior Center’s annual Women’s Day Salad Luncheon.
    “We have some women at the senior center who do not have children, so we thought it would be better for them not to feel left out at the tea,” Hornberger said.
    The luncheon will be sponsored by the Dodge City Senior Center, RSVP and Senior Friends. It will be free and open to the public.
