DODGE CITY —

It worked for Grandma Moses
Artists age 65 and older are encouraged to participate in the 2009 "Art Is Ageless" exhibit and competition. This year marks the 29th juried exhibition. Sponsored by Presbyterian Manor, rules and entry forms are available by calling Patty McGee at (620) 225-1928.
Entries must be received by Aug. 4, and judging will take place Aug. 8.
Winning local entries will be sent on to advanced competitions and eventually 12 national winners will be published in the 2010 Art Is Ageless calendar.
Entries in the local competition will be on exhibit at the Carnegie Center for the Arts through Sept. 8.

Summer in the city
As unbelievable as it seems, summer is far enough along that it's time for Dodge City Days. While the first day of school can't be far behind and some of the stores are putting out Christmas merchandise already, the good citizens of Dodge City will spend 10 days racing, dancing in the streets, parading, roping and, of course, eating. Let the games begin.

Here's a brief
summary of what's on the official Dodge City Days schedule:

Still looking
The 2009 medallion hunt continues. Clues began appearing in the Globe Monday, but no one has brought the medallion in yet. New clues are published daily, and you can pick up the entire list of previous clues at the Globe offices at 705 N. Second Ave.

Let's get this party started
This year's Friday night kick-off includes a new event and an old favorite. Dodge City Raceway Park hosts the Dodge City Days Rock N' Race Fest, a mix of stock cars, sprint cars, and the rock 'n' roll of Pop Evil and Jackyl.
The Boot Hill Bull Fry and Bash features calf fries, brisket, coleslaw and lots of fixin's. Entertainment by the Q97 Road Show.
And the first of several street dances heats up the pavement at Central Station to the music of "Ask Vinnie."

Saturday
Parade day begins with the Dawn to Dusk City-Wide Sidewalk Sale, the 5K and 1-mile race and the Coors/MGA golf tournament. The Western Parade hits the streets at 10 a.m., followed by the Backyard Barbecue Contest in Wright Park. In the evening, more races at Dodge City Raceway Park and the Q97 Country Concert at Roundup Arena.
Post-concert, hit two more street dances, at Casey's Cowtown and Central Station.

Sunday
That honking sound you hear Sunday afternoon will be the Z-98 Great Quack Attack. In the evening, Fiesta offers a great evening of food and musical entertainment at Rancho El Palomino.
In the park, D & J Shows' carnival settles in for four days of skill and screams.

Monday
Landmark's Western Art Show opens through Friday with the multiple media of artist Jimmy Don Cox.
In the evening, the Southern Gospel Christian concert raises spirits, and the Cathedral of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Dodge City Community College hosts the annual teen dance.

Tuesday
Roping events and the nightly rodeo begin at Roundup Arena. Two popular events take place in the park -- Family Hamburger Night/Media Night and Cox Communications Summer Sing bring folks to the park for food and entertainment.

Wednesday
Another favorite event -- the chuckwagon breakfast -- wakes up Boot Hill. Youthville's Special Rodeo teams children and professional rodeo contestants for the experience of a lifetime. Special features of tonight's rodeo are family night, a hamburger feed, a fireworks extravaganza and the Marshal's Kiddie Corral.

Thursday
It's Dog Day Afternoon in the park -- moon walk, dunk tank, wacky trikes, and to top it all off, clown autographs. The Western Kansas Horse Expo and Equine Trade Show saddles up for two days at the 4-H building, and the Miss Rodeo Kansas Teen Pageant begins its activities.
Late-night entertainment begins at the Depot as Dodge City Days Turn Into Dodge City Nights — the best of jazz and blues from three of Dodge City's home-town divas.

Friday
Roundup's Cowboy Classic golf tournament hits the course bright and early. The evening's rodeo features the Cargill Hamburger Feed. The Alley provides a dance for the younger crowd: Sixth- to eighth-graders from 7 to 9 p.m. and ninth- to 12-graders from 10 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
The Jared Daniels Band covers the Central Station street dance.

Saturday
The Saddle Up Bike Ride, with routes ranging from four to 60 miles, leaves from the Waters True Value parking lot. The Dodge City Days Arts, Crafts and Things Show works from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. downtown, and the classic car show shines in Wright Park.
The Kiddie Parade works its way from Sacred Heart School parking lot to Boot Hill, and the Carnegie Center for the Arts hosts Kids Art from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The High Noon Gunfight at Boot Hill will be heard all over town, and it's your chance to wear pink at the rodeo.
Dustin Evans and the Good Times light up Central Station.

Sunday
Time for winding down with the AMBUCS golf tournament, cowboy church, McDonald's Kidfest in Wright Park and Wendy's cash giveaway.
