Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad is bringing its "Officer on a Train" safety campaign back to Dodge City.
From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, a law enforcement officer will ride the train as it moves back and forth through Dodge. The officer will watch for drivers who try to get around the crossing gate or stop on the tracks,.
Kansas law requires drivers nearing a railroad crossing to stop within 15 to 50 feet of the tracks if they see or hear an approaching train. They must not proceed until they can do so safely.
The law also forbids people from driving around railroad crossing gates as they are opening or closing. Drivers may not stop or park on railroad tracks unless they are complying with a police officer's instructions, obeying traffic control device or avoiding conflict with other traffic.
