Dodge City —

The Philomaths
The April 25 meeting of the Philomaths was held in the home of Betty Muncy, with Margaret Cole serving as co-hostess.
President Susan Bunyan presided over the business meeting.  Nineteen members and one associate member attended the meeting.   We also had one guest in attendance, Brenda Cole, daughter-in-law of Margaret Cole. The president reminded all members that their dues will be due at the May meeting.
The program for the meeting was on Kansas women athletes. Marsha Morrison chose for her topic two Kansas women basketball players, Lynette Woodard and Jackie Stiles. Lynette Woodard, a Wichita native, was a four-time All-American basketball player at Kansas University, a two-time U.S. Olympian and the first female member of the world-famous Harlem Globetrotters. Jackie Stiles, from Claflin, was shooting guard who set scoring  records in high school and college and led her team, Southwest Missouri State University, now Missouri State, to the Final Four her senior year.  In the 2001 WNBA draft, Stiles was selected fourth overall by the Portland Fire and was later voted the Rookie of the Year.
The next meeting, May 9, will be a brunch at 10 a.m. at the home of Marcia Astleford. Bev Winans and Joanne Whelchel will serve as co-hostesses. The program will be presented by the yearbook committee.
