A Dodge City man was taken into protective custody Friday night after holing up with a handgun in his truck at a car wash in south Dodge City.
The story began about 3 p.m., when the 27-year-old man's family reported that he had a weapon and was threatening to take his own life, Ford County Sheriff Dean Bush said in a news release. Then at 5:23 p.m., the man was found sitting in his 2005 Nissan pickup truck in one of the bays at the car wash at 1000 S. Second Ave.
The first officer to arrive on the scene confirmed that the man was armed with a handgun and threatening to kill himself, Bush said.
Officers from the Dodge City Police Department, the sheriff's office, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation, the Kansas Highway Patrol and crews from the Dodge City Fire Department and Ford County Fire/EMS were summoned to the scene, and the area around the car wash was blocked off.
Police negotiators tried to convince the man to leave his vehicle, and their efforts paid off at about 7:15 p.m. when the man got out of his truck and gave up his handgun, Bush said. The man was then taken into protective custody.
The man is not facing criminal charges because he had not threatened anyone but himself, Bush said. Since that was the case, the sheriff declined to release the man's name.
